Climber Selection Submission Protocol

“Every scar tells a story. Every step reclaims a life.”

The purpose of this submission process is to identify individuals whose stories, determination,

resilience, and spirit embody what this climb represents:

Hope. Courage. Recovery. Human potential.

This is not simply about climbing a mountain.

This is about overcoming the mountain within.

APPLICATION OVERVIEW

Applicants will complete:

1. Short Written Application

2. Personal Video Submission

3. Photo Submissions

4. Medical & Physical Readiness Review

5. Community & Fundraising Commitment Acknowledgment

The entire process should take approximately 5–10 minutes to complete initially.

PART 1 — WRITTEN SUBMISSION

PERSONAL STORY SECTION

1. Tell us about yourself.

• Name

• Age

• City & State

• Occupation

• Family / support system

• Hobbies or passions

2. How did you become an amputee?

We encourage honesty and vulnerability.

Tell us:

• What happened

• How your life changed

• What emotions you experienced

• What recovery looked like

This is your story.

3. What was your life like before amputation?

Examples:

• Career

• Athletics

• Parenting

• Independence

• Passions

• Identity

We want to understand what was lost…

and what you fought to regain.

4. What were the hardest moments after amputation?

Examples:

• Physical pain

• Depression

• Fear

• Isolation

• Confidence

• Learning to walk again

• Impact on family

5. How did you find your prosthetist? Tell us: what company do you use

• Who helped you

• What your prosthetist meant to you

• What your experience has been like

• How they changed your journey

6. What does walking mean to you today?

This can be emotional, practical, symbolic, spiritual, or deeply personal.

7. Why do you want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

What would this journey represent in your life?

What would reaching the summit mean to you emotionally?

8. What message would you want the world to hear from your story?

PART 2 — VIDEO SUBMISSION

VIDEO REQUIREMENTS

Length: 2–4 minutes

Format: Phone video is perfectly acceptable.

No professional production needed.

We are looking for:

• authenticity

• emotion

• honesty

• humanity

VIDEO PROMPTS

Please introduce yourself and answer the following in your own words:

REQUIRED TOPICS• Who are you?

• How did you become an amputee?

• What has your recovery journey been like?

• What role did Hanger play in your life?

• Why does this climb matter to you?

• What would standing on the summit mean emotionally?

OPTIONAL VIDEO MOMENTS

Applicants are encouraged to include clips/photos of:

• rehabilitation

• training

• family

• prosthetic fitting

• daily life

• moments of struggle

• moments of triumph

The most powerful stories are real stories.

PART 3 — PHOTO SUBMISSIONS

Please include:

• Recent photo

• Full-body photo with prosthetic(s)

• Optional lifestyle/training/family photos

PART 4 — PHYSICAL & MEDICAL

READINESS

Selected finalists may later be asked to provide:

• Physician clearance

• Prosthetic evaluation

• Cardiovascular readiness

• Training commitment acknowledgment

This is not about elite athleticism.

This is about determination, preparation, and safety.

PART 5 — COMMUNITY & STORYTELLING COMMITMENT

Participants selected for the climb will become ambassadors for:

• resilience

• recovery

• adaptive athletics

• amputee empowerment

• possibility

Climbers may participate in:

• media interviews

• documentary filming

• social media storytelling

• fundraising campaigns

• sponsor activations

• community outreach
